AVOIDING INCORRECT PART NUMBER SELECTION / ACCURATE VEHICLE APPLICATION IDENTIFICATION

We have identified an issue which has been highlighted to us after a competitor cross reference was used as the only qualifying data to look up an INA timing belt kit.

In most circumstances this shouldn’t cause a problem, but on this occasion the vehicle concerned was a very late production model and the timing belt kit supplied and fitted was later found to be incorrect for the application. In this instance, the use of the wrong kit resulted in a serious and very expensive engine failure, and when the complete vehicle details were checked it became apparent that a different tensioner, with a much higher rated spring, should have been supplied. It is worth noting that the tensioner supplied in the kit, the unit which came off the vehicle and the later higher rated unit are all visually identical.

There are many different timing belt kits available in the aftermarket today, all with varying levels of kit content and quality of components supplied. Given the huge variety of engines with different outputs used, it is no longer possible to accurately and correctly identify every required timing belt kit, or indeed any other engine critical component, by using a cross reference list alone. A cross reference can be used as a guide, but the latest vehicle application data must always be used for correct identification.

Up-to-date and accurate vehicle application info can be found in the TecDoc catalog at
www.repxpert.co.uk or https://aftermarket.schaeffler.co.uk or https://webcat.schaeffler.com.
The catalog is also available in our free REPXPERT app for mobile devices.

If you are still have concerns about the suitability of the part you have selected, you can call the REPXPERT technical hotline on +44 (0)872 7370037 to check part number and application accuracy (charges may apply).

Please make sure that all of your staff are aware of the correct procedure for accurately identifying the correct parts required as outlined above.

Schaeffler cannot accept claims against any of its products relating to inaccurate cross referencing or incorrect vehicle application identification.
